What is a time-lapse video?
A time lapse video is a series of photos shot over a period of time.
The images are then combined into a video and it gives the advent of time being sped up. It is great for showing a decorated market, sunrises, sunsets, blooming flowers, etc.
1. GoPro Time Lapse Settings
Here'due south an overview of the settings and considerations for setting upwardly your GoPro time lapse shoot. For a full breakup of the settings, check out the set of time lapse tutorials beneath.
Before you tin can make up one's mind on your settings, y'all'll need to decide on what your terminal product volition exist. How long do yous want your video to be? How much action practice you lot want to capture?
- 10 Seconds: To create a 10 second time lapse video, you'll take to shoot for 5 minutes (1 prototype per second) or 25 minutes (1 image every 5 seconds) if you play back the images at a standard thirty frames per 2d (fps).
- 30 Seconds: To create a thirty 2nd time lapse video, y'all'll have to shoot for 15 minutes (1 image per second) or 75 minutes (1 prototype every 5 seconds) if you play back the images at a standard xxx frames per 2d (fps).
GoPro Time Lapse Settings
Hither are the settings you lot should consider when shooting a GoPro fourth dimension lapse:
- Resolution: (7MP Wide) For the Hero4 Black, I recommend shooting at 7MP West(ide). If you don't require a wide angle, the 5MP M setting will be perfect. What size video will you create with these still photos? While yous can shoot your images at the highest resolution, there is limited benefits do this. What size photograph do yous need to shoot a 4K time lapse? 4K resolution (3840 x 2160) is just an 8.iii-megapixel prototype. Even if you shoot 5-megapixel yet images, this will allow you to render a 2.7K time lapse video (2.7K video resolution is 2704 x 1520 or four.i-megapixel stills). Retrieve: higher resolution images mean larger files.
- Shooting intervals: (1 prototype every 2 seconds) Interval options range from one image from every 0.five second upward to every 60 seconds. For most situations, you'll observe that an interval of 2 seconds will work well. Reduce the interval (0.5 or i second) and your video will slow down. Increase the interval (5 to 60 seconds) and your fourth dimension will pass faster (if you render at the same rate).
- Shooting length: (From 10 to 20 minutes) This depends on your shooting interval and what yous're shooting. You'll want enough time to pass to ensure that you lot capture some activeness. A busy street volition require less time than slow moving clouds. You should identify the camera for at to the lowest degree ten minutes if you're using an interval of ii-seconds. This volition create a 10-2nd video prune – perfect for scenes with lots of activeness (traffic, people). I usually shoot sunsets for one-hour or more. The dominicus moves slowly and you need a longer shooting length to prove the move.
- Protune: Protune is a prepare of features that enhance your footage. Shooting in Protune is an advanced setting and isn't required. Learn more most shooting in Protune apartment.
2. Gear for GoPro Time Lapse
Bated from the camera and the correct settings (see to a higher place) you lot don't need much gear to shoot a great time lapse video with your GoPro.
Simply in that location are some things that will brand information technology easier. Hither's what you should consider:
- Stable Mount: Without a tripod, your images will not alloy properly into a watchable video.
- Big retentiveness bill of fare: Fifty-fifty if yous shoot at 5 or 7MP, the card can make full upwards quickly. Choose the largest card you tin can afford – and that your camera volition have.
- Batteries: If yous desire to shoot longer than ane hour, you'll want extra batteries.
- Rotating mount: This will give a sweeping motion to your time lapse video.
Stable GoPro Mounts
There are a number of mounts that will do this. And the best mount for your shoot will depend on where you're shooting.
- UltraClamp Mount: This is 1 of my favorite mounts. It attaches to benches, doors and sign posts. Read my UltraClamp review.
- GorillaPod: I bought my first GorillaPod with my first dSLR about 10-years ago – and I'm yet using it. They are expensive and they are worth it. I now own three different sizes – the newest one has a level and a ball head for fast leveling.
- Suction Loving cup Mountain: This is all-time for driving time lapse videos. I created a dozen videos of Cuenca, Republic of ecuador while driving around the city in my truck.
Big (and fast) retentiveness card
Even if you lot shoot at five or 7MP, the carte du jour can make full up quickly. GoPro cameras all utilise microSD cards. Here's what we utilise in all our cameras:
- SanDisk Extreme (32, 64, 128GB): While you tin access the photos via USB cable, I usually remove the microSD card and re-create the footage via a card reader and the included SD menu adapter.
Although y'all tin can get microSD cards upward to 256GB, GoPro cameras will only accept upward to 128GB.
GoPro Batteries
- Internal GoPro Batteries: I like to travel with a scattering of charged batteries. If you shoot a time lapse that lasts longer than an hour, you'll need to modify your batteries. Because Hero5 is yet brand new, there aren't many aftermarket options for batteries. This should modify in the coming months.
- Powerbank: For extended time lapse shoots, y'all might consider direct connecting a power-bank directly to your camera. I've done this a few times and it is astonishing.
- GoPro Session (Hero4 and Hero5) don't have a removable battery pack.
Rotating mounts
There are two ways to exercise this: Camalapse or DIY.
- DIY Rotating Mountain: With a kitchen timer and an adhesive mountain you can make your ain rotating fourth dimension-lapse.
- Camalapse: If you're like me, you lot like the sounds of DIY simply it takes time. For a few bucks more, y'all tin can buy a mount that is make just for this purpose. This is the mount that we own. I'll be publishing footage from it before long.

How to Create a Cloud Timelapse Video (Ecuador)
In this department, I'll share the specific settings I used to create a cloud timelapse video in Ecuador's Andes mountains.
Check out the tutorial below.
But beginning, here's the last product:
This was shot from our apartment in Santa Isabel, Yunguilla Valley (located 90 minutes from the city of Cuenca).
When I shot this, we were making plans to return to Canada. And nosotros didn't desire to forget what our back deck view had been for 3 years.
But first, here is the last product:
Settings to Create a Deject Timelapse Video
Here are the settings I used to shoot this cloud timelapse.
- Shot one prototype every 5 seconds with my GoPro Hero3 Silverish
- Resolution: eleven MP
- 3744 Images / 16.iv GB
- Length of shoot: Just over 5 hours
- Shoot Date: Feb 1, 2022
- Location: Yunguilla Valley, Republic of ecuador. Located xc minutes from the city of Cuenca
- Edited with: GoPro Studio (gratis software by GoPro)
- Camera mount: This was one of my more baroque ones. I mounted the GoPro on the stop of a three-foot extend pole and then mounted that to a full-size tripod (see image beneath). Since the photographic camera has such a wide-angle view, and I was shooting from my back deck, I wanted to put the camera past those distracting elements and capture just the cloud movement. Not only did that not piece of work, but the air current also moved the camera and affected the image quality. Live and learn…
Come across mail service-production details below the image.
Post Product: Create a Deject Time Lapse
The first thing I did was delete the spoiled frames from battery changes and distracting elements.
Inside of GoPro Studio, I imported all the images and created a video at 48 fps. When I played this dorsum, information technology was too deadening. The clouds didn't seem to move fast enough. I then boosted the playback charge per unit past 50% (the software shows information technology at 150%) which created an effective 72fps.
Since I was shooting 12 images/ minute, this means that each hour of cloud movement was reduced to ten seconds of video.
While GoPro Studio is no longer available, there are all the same lots of great GoPro video editors to choose from.
What I Learned From This Project
I learned two lessons from this cloud timelapse projection:
- The biggest flaw with this time-lapse is that the camera wasn't steady. As mentioned above, I had the GoPro on the terminate of a iii′ extend pole that was mounted on a total-size tripod. The wind easily moved the camera, causing a shake and some distracting movement.
- For longer shoots, I can shoot fewer images and then reduce the playback frame rate. The terminal product volition be the aforementioned and I'll need fewer images. For case, for my side by side deject time-lapse, I recall I'll try shooting a frame rate of i prototype/ 10 seconds (6/min) with a rendering frame rate of 30fps.
For context, here is a withal shot of the valley.
I'chiliad pretty happy to accept this video. We watched this cloud activity every day for three years – and now nosotros'll never forget what it looked like.
Create GoPro Tide Timelapse Video (Bay of Fundy)
Learn how to shoot a tide timelapse video with your GoPro camera. This video was shot in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
Cheque out the tutorial below.
Simply start, here's the final product:
A few weeks ago, we happened upon depression tide in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. The small basin in front end of Waterfront Park was completely empty. It looked like a giant, empty mud puddle.
Nosotros prepare up the GoPro and started shooting. Over the side by side eighty minutes, the basin completely filled with the tidal waters of the Bay of Fundy.
In the following video, I explain the whole procedure. Below the video, I share all the specs and settings used in this shoot.
How to Create a GoPro Tide Time Lapse Video
How I Created This GoPro Tide Fourth dimension Lapse
I setup the photographic camera on the UltraPod mount. It is stable and depression to the ground.
As yous can meet in the following images, I have the camera in an open (not-waterproof) mountain. With this mountain, I can connect an external ability source. I did this because the bombardment wasn't 100% – and I didn't know how long it would take to fill the basin.
In the cease, information technology didn't matter. My Wasabi battery lasted the total 81 minutes and still had charge left.
Settings Used to Create theGoPro Tide Time Lapse
- Camera settings: 1 prototype every ii seconds (30 images / infinitesimal) at 7MP resolution.
- Total shoot time: 81 minutes. Full of 2430 still images.
- Location: Reservoir Park, Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada. Shot in front of the gazebo.
- Gear Used: GoPro Hero4 Black camera, Pedco UltraPod II tripod, Wasabi battery.
- To render the video, I used GoPro Studio. In GoPro Studio, I rendered the video at 2 speeds. The fast speed was rendered at 150 frames per second (fps) and the slower speed at threescore fps.
What I Learned From This Shoot
Overall, I'g happy with the final production. Here'southward what I learned from this time lapse shoot:
- I can reduce the time lapse interval for shooting wearisome moving clouds and water. For my side by side shoot, I'll use 5 frames per second.
- I think it would have been more dramatic to mount the camera higher and angled down. The camera was setup just a couple of meters above high-h2o marking, making the water announced to be almost on the same level. If I had mounted it higher, I could have cut out more than sky and shown the dramatic rise in water level.
- The music I chose was too brusk. At 0:59 in the final video, the music stopped and so restarted. Information technology felt like the video must be over, but it had another 13 seconds to get. I should take either chose the correct length or blended the two clips together better. (Update November. 12, 2022: To fix the weird music edit, I just replaced my audio rails with i on YouTube – without having to render and upload a new video. Such a time saver!)
To requite some context to the shoot, here are a couple images from the park in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
